Tea Time & Books...

25th May 2020

A Lil’ Book Haul

It’s safe to say that I’ve read more in the last 9 weeks than the entirety of last year! So I couldn’t help myself and made a little book order that came the other week, so I thought I’d show you what I picked up!

Tweet Cute – Emma Lord
I saw this a lot on Instagram and it looked too cute not to pick up. It’s about two teenagers who go to the same school and, for a while, unknowingly end up in a Twitter war against each other. Mix in an anonymous chat-room app, grilled cheese battles and some awkwardness this book is a light, fluffy read that is bound to make you smile!

The Wicked King – Holly Black
This is the second book in The Cruel Prince series, and I’ll be honest, I’m still not sure how I feel about it. The first books took me a good while to get into but I really enjoyed the second half. So I almost half-heartedly picked this one up in the hope that the continuation hooks me quicker than the first. I can’t really say much without spoiling the first book, but this is about three sisters who live in the fairie word and must navigate being at the bottom of the hierarchy.

The Queens Rising – Rebecca Ross
I know pretty much nothing about this book, other than its a female-led fantasy which seems to be my jam at the moment. It seems as though people can choose one of five talents to study and excel in – art, music, dramatics, wit or knowledge and Brienna must discover hers. Mix this with some kind of dangerous plot against the northern kingdom and the choice between honouring your past or fighting for the future, it sounds like a great read.

Unnatural Causes – Dr Richard Shepherd
I really enjoyed This Is Going To Hurt when it first came out, and I’ve seen a few people talk about this one too, so I thought I’d pick it up in the hopes I enjoy it just as much. Dr Richard Shepherd is a top forensic pathologist who has performed over 23,000 autopsies, tackling everything from serial killers, natural disasters and freak accidents. I think this will be a super interesting one to get stuck into.

Conviction – Denise Mina
I haven’t seen anyone really talk about this, but I’ve really enjoyed the last thriller type books that I’ve read, so I thought I’d give this one a go too! Anna likes to listen to podcasts until she recognises a name in the latest true-crime one she’s listening to. She dives deep into investigating the case, convinced something else happened, which is when her past and present lives collide and she has to deal with the fallout.

The Other Wife – Claire McGowan
I’ve seen this do the rounds on Instagram and when I saw it on Amazon for £4, I couldn’t say no. The lives of three strangers are brought together after a shocking event that will change their lives. This is obviously a bit of a thriller/mystery book and was always popping up whenever I was looking for new books, so I’m excited to dive in.

Where The Crawdads Sing – Delia Owens
This is another one I’ve seen doing the rounds, and seen a lot of people doing readalongs, so it was first on my list to buy. This is about the rumour of the ‘Marsh Girl’ in a small town on the Northern Carolina coast and after a murder in 1969, the immediate suspect is the ‘Marsh Girl’. Perhaps she is not at all what she seems, and we’ll find out as we follow her in her quest for a new life, and the need for love. Also, the cover is so beautiful, it’s hard to not want it sitting on your shelf.

So those are the books I’ve picked up recently, and I can’t wait to get stuck into them. Have you been buying any books lately? Let me know in the comments below!

I always get sucked into the 99p deals, I'm a sucker for a deal! However, is it a deal when you have hundreds of books on your kindle already that you haven't read yet? 🤣 This month I picked up:

✨️ The Enigma of Room 622

Have I been telling absolutely everyone who would lend me an ear about how absolutely fantastic this new musical is? Yes, yes I have! I booked this back in November on a complete whim! Mostly because in the email I got, it was described as "part Mel Brooks, part Six, part Hamilton with a side order of One Man, Two Guvnors", and if that doesn't hook you I don't know what will! Other than the brief synopsis in the email, I went in blind, knowing nothing about the show, the music or the actors but man do I want to shout about them now.

Firstly, the Fortune Theatre felt like the perfect kind of venue for a show like this, surprisingly intimate and like you were actually involved in the action. From the very first song, I was hooked, I knew that I was in for a good one! The actors were all absolutely phenomenal, each one with comical timing that was absolutely on the money along with some fantastic pipes that were definitely easy on the ears. I laughed, I teared up, I didn't want it to end, everything from the music to the staging was absolute perfection if you ask me. @spitlip aren't a group I'd heard of before, but certainly won't be one I forget fast. I will absolutely without a single doubt be going to see this again before it closes, and only pray that it actually sticks around. Potentially the best new musical I've seen in a very, very long time! Go get your tickets now, old chap! ✌️
