Tea Time & Books...

17th March 2019

Reading Habits Bookish Tag.

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?
Not really, I’ll read almost anywhere in general! But I do prefer to read somewhere I can get comfortable, like my bed or on the sofa.

Bookmark or random piece of paper?
Both? Although I’m leaning more towards bookmark since I got one in one in an online order a little while ago. I’ve been using it ever since!

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/a certain amount of pages?
I will do everything I can to finish a chapter because I feel it’s easier to pick up again from the start of a chapter. But at a push, I will read to the end of a page as long as the sentence doesn’t continue to the next one.

Do you eat or drink while reading?
I love a good cup of tea while reading and sometimes if a book has really gripped me, I’ll read it while eating breakfast before work. But I try not to, purely because I’m so clumsy and would not doubt spill something.

Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?
Ideally neither, I like reading in silence if possible. But I can read while either is on, it’ll take me a couple of pages to really tune the background noise out, but I can eventually.

One book at a time or several at once?
I used to be able to read a handful of books at a time, but now I get too mixed up too easily. So I tend to stick to one book at a time because it keeps things fresh and coherent in my head

Reading at home or everywhere?
Everywhere! The train, the bus, a car, walking home, at work, in bed. If I have time to scroll through Twitter, I have time to read a book!

Reading out loud or silently in your head?
I used to read out loud when I was studying a book for school because it helped cement specific scenes and quotes in my head, but now I read silently unless there’s a particularly great passage I feel the need to share.

Do you read ahead or even skip pages?
Okay so, I always read the last paragraph of a book before I start reading a book. I’m not sure why I think it’s just habit at this point. But I don’t really skip pages, at most I’ll maybe skim read a few pages if I’m losing interest or the momentum of the book has slowed and I’ve tuned out a little, but I wouldn’t just skip a few pages and carry on, who knows what you’ll miss!

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?
If I can, I will keep it as new as possible! I love books to look fresh and new on my bookcase and very rarely do I crack the spine. If I do accidentally while I’m reading I always cringe a little bit.

Do you write in your books?
Never. Well, that’s a lie, I used to at school but that’s because we had to annotate them. I don’t think there’s a single book since I’ve left school that I’ve written in, it just feels so so wrong.

When do you find yourself reading?
I tend to read when I am calm and don’t have 100 things to do. I find it very easy to get caught up with the swirling thoughts in my head, and when that happens it’s very hard for me to concentrate on anything else.

What is your best setting to read in?
On the sofa, with a blanket, a very big cup of tea, while it’s raining outside.

What do you do first – read or watch?
I try to read first whenever I can. Because as soon as you watch something, it’s hard to imagine anything else when you’re reading it. I think you miss out a little by not having the chance to imagine the world and characters for yourself.

What form do you prefer? Audiobook, E-Book or physical book?
A physical book every time! I don’t mind an e-book, sometimes it’s more practical, but there’s just something about a book I will always prefer.

Do you have a unique habit when you read?
I don’t think so, I’m very good at having conversations while still reading. But I wouldn’t say that was unique or a talent!

Do book series have to match?
YES! It drives me absolutely mad if a book series doesn’t match. Everything, the height, the covers, paperback or hardback, everything has to match!

I always get sucked into the 99p deals, I'm a sucker for a deal! However, is it a deal when you have hundreds of books on your kindle already that you haven't read yet? 🤣 This month I picked up:

✨️ The Enigma of Room 622
✨️ Happy Place
✨️ The Wolf and the Woodsman
✨️ Notes on Heartbreak
✨️ Her Majesty's Royal Coven
✨️ Merideth Alone

Have you picked any of these up? Read any? Let me know! ☺️

Have I been telling absolutely everyone who would lend me an ear about how absolutely fantastic this new musical is? Yes, yes I have! I booked this back in November on a complete whim! Mostly because in the email I got, it was described as "part Mel Brooks, part Six, part Hamilton with a side order of One Man, Two Guvnors", and if that doesn't hook you I don't know what will! Other than the brief synopsis in the email, I went in blind, knowing nothing about the show, the music or the actors but man do I want to shout about them now.

Firstly, the Fortune Theatre felt like the perfect kind of venue for a show like this, surprisingly intimate and like you were actually involved in the action. From the very first song, I was hooked, I knew that I was in for a good one! The actors were all absolutely phenomenal, each one with comical timing that was absolutely on the money along with some fantastic pipes that were definitely easy on the ears. I laughed, I teared up, I didn't want it to end, everything from the music to the staging was absolute perfection if you ask me. @spitlip aren't a group I'd heard of before, but certainly won't be one I forget fast. I will absolutely without a single doubt be going to see this again before it closes, and only pray that it actually sticks around. Potentially the best new musical I've seen in a very, very long time! Go get your tickets now, old chap! ✌️
